Kalash Valley

The Kalash Valleys are valleys in Chitral District in northern Pakistan. The valleys are surrounded by the Hindu Kush mountain range. The inhabitants of the valley are the Kalash people, who have a unique culture, language and follow a form of ancient Hinduism. As such, the Kalasha Valleys are a source of attraction for Pakistani as well as International tourists. There are three main valleys. The largest and most populous valley is Bumburet, reached by a road from Ayun in the Kunar Valley. Rumbur and Acholgah are side valleys north of Bumburet. The third valley, Biriu, is s side valley of the Kunar Valley south of Bumburet.

Chitral is mostly known for its remoteness and the Kalash tribes. Road only accept jeeps and pickups. The views of barren mountains, side by side snow caped peaks and glaciers feeding the valleys. The beauty increase many times more in autumn. In this time of the year you can see all the colors. From green to yellow, and red to orange. Big and old walnut and mulberry trees and beside them the giant maple trees. In the beginning of spring the sweet and magical smell of russian olive really takes you to heavens. In july eating raspberry frozen in glacier water is an experience worth doing. All in all these valleys starting from Reshun, Charun, Boni, Parwak, Mearagram, Sonoghor, Laspur, Mastuj, Brep, Chunj, Chapdi and all the way to Broghil and Shandoor plains.  Polo on the roof of the world (shandur-12600 ft) played with wild rules and yak polo at Broghil (16000 ft aprox) are main events of July, 7th july to 9th in Shandur and 15th to 17th July at Broghil.

Traditional Black Dress of Kalash Woman

Kalash women usually wear long black robes, often embroidered with cowrie shells. For this reason, they are known in Chitral as “The Black Kafirs”. In this photo, a Kalash woman is helping her daughter cross a stream on a bamboo pole, both dressed in black traditional dress.

I will say Kalash is the Hindu Kush civilization preserved in its original form. Nothing has been changed, from centuries the are performing the exact practices. The originality of their cultural made them world most visited place. People from all around the world came here to look ho ancient cultures lived.
