Life and work of Vahan Ananyan closely associated with Armenia, Ukraine and Estonia, his paintings are in the collections of both hemispheres. And, nevertheless, he is still considered a “little-known artist.” The exhibition “Vahan Ananyan: Eternal Knight” in the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art reopens to the public this talented, but underrated master.

Vahan Ananyan (1959 – 2006) lived only 47 years. He was born in Yerevan, where from 1972 to 1976 he studied drawing and composition in the workshop of the famous sculptor Sergey Stepanyan. In the capital of Armenia passed the three first personal exhibition of the young artist. In 1985, he moved to Tallinn, and 9 years later – to Odessa, where he remained until his death.

“At the end of 1980 in the Odessa City Garden Vahan Ananyan he painted portraits. Signs: Kilp Vahan. Today his works are in private collections in Europe (Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Ukraine, Estonia), North America (Canada, USA), Australia and Japan.

During his career, Vahan Ananyan wrote about 500 paintings. The Museum of Western and Eastern Art will feature 50 of them, mostly belonging to the “Odessa” period. “The exhibition’s title underlines the theme of chivalry, the struggle between light and darkness, characteristic creativity Vahan. This is something with which he fought himself. He managed to escape from the dark and start to emit light. The exhibition “Vahan Ananyan: Eternal Knight” will be held with the assistance of the Armenian community of Odessa and the International Development Association and the support of Ukrainian culture. A special guest will be the opening of the Armenian film director and president of the film festival “Golden Apricot” Harutyun Khachatryan. It is a film about Vahan Ananyan, which will be a continuation tape “Wind of Oblivion” (1990).
