The Salt Flat “Salar de Uyuni” Bolivia

Salar is a Spanish word means SaltUyuni means Enclosure. Thus Salar de Uyuni can be translated as a Salt Flat with enclosures, the letter possibly referring to the “Islands” of the Salar(salt).


Salar de Uyuni  is located in Bolivia. It is the largest salt flat in the world. It is on altitude of  3,656 meters. It has length of 10,582 square kilometer. It is formed from the transformation between many lakes. The salt crust is several meters thick. The salt surface is very welly flat. It contain 50-70% of Lithium reserves and they are in the process of extraction. Many chemists are working so the process must carried out correctly. It is also famous for several species of Flamingo.


It is famous for many important element, compound and matters. Famous of which are Sodium(Na), Potassium, Lithium, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Lithium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride. There are many reserve of Borex found. Lithium and Borex are major component of Batteries. This flat give Bolivia the advantage of holding 70% of world lithium reserves, of which more than 80% are found in Salar.


Salar de Uyuni attracts tourists from around the world. As it is located far from the cities, a number of hotels have been built in the area. Due to lack of conventional construction materials, many of them are almost entirely built with salt blocks cut from the Salar. New salt hotels were built near the periphery of the Salar de Uyuni, closer to roads, in full compliance with environmental rules.

One major tourist attraction is an antique train cemetery. It is 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) outside Salar de Uyuni and is connected with the old train tracks. The train is used to carry minerals.

Salar de Uyuni is known for its bright white color upon which the blue skies image reflects creates a stunning and wonderful view which is more liked by the peoples. Visitor came here and take some best of clicks for their lives.

However, travelers should take great care in choosing which tour operator to go with when visiting the salt flats. Fatal accidents due to unsafe vehicles and drivers are not unheard of.
